Astrology uses symbols—often called glyphs—to make charts readable at a glance. Once you know the main glyphs for signs and planets, charts become much less intimidating.
Why astrology uses symbols
Charts are compact maps. Symbols make it possible to show a lot of information in a small space. Instead of writing out “Mercury in Gemini in the third house,” a chart can show the Mercury glyph, the Gemini glyph, and the house position visually.
The most important symbols to learn first
Beginners should start with the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars, then add Jupiter and Saturn. On the sign side, learn all twelve zodiac glyphs, especially the signs that appear in your own chart. You do not need to memorize everything at once; start with recognition and build from there.
Symbols beyond signs and planets
Astrology charts also include symbols for aspects like conjunction, square, trine, opposition, and sextile. You may also see symbols for the ascendant, midheaven, lunar nodes, and retrograde motion. These appear often in chart wheels and app interfaces.
How to use symbols while learning
The best way to learn is to connect the symbol to meaning. When you see the Moon glyph, think emotions, habits, and inner life. When you see Scorpio, think depth, intensity, and transformation. Repetition inside your own chart makes the system stick faster.
